‘THE FRAMEWORKS OF MY LIFE’
By Mavarine Du-Marie

Structure and framework have been important in my life. From a young person through to my adulthood.

For as a young person living, learning and negotiating transitions to adulthood and independence in an increasingly complex and challenging world, in which we face greater levels of choice and opportunity, but also unprecedented uncertainty and risk. I wanted to share what helped me to feel more grounded, secure and able to cope with what life throw at me.

And this called for me, when I reflected in adulthood being resilient when facing an obstacle and empowered at each turn to note its lessons, which played an active role in navigating these paths on my journey in work and life.

There is substantial and growing evidence that developing social and emotional capabilities supports the achievement of positive life outcomes, including educational attainment, employment and health. Capabilities such as resilience, communication, and negotiation are also increasingly cited as being the foundations of employability. Evidence shows that approaches that focus on building social and emotional capabilities such as these can have greater long-term impact than ones that focus on directly seeking to reduce the ‘symptoms’ of poor outcomes for people.

This needs to be done, I believe, through frameworks and having structure in ones life. Structure usually comes from society, religion, governments and employment. But less talked about and acknowledged is the framework that the individual has the choice in creating and building for themselves that impact on leading a meaningful life.

This journey with its flow of experiences still needed a framework that would hold the reflections and practices together as they moved along in my life. So it was important to have not only any reference points (as in self-actualisation by Dr. Maslow) and (Fully Functioning Person by Carl Rogers) but also a structured guide, and I found that in certain Frameworks that I could express my values and experiences with clarity.

This eBook that I’ve written, of the frameworks that I used and I have lived through in practice daily, shows the outcomes and is designed to highlight the fundamental importance of social and emotional capabilities to the achievement of all other outcomes for all people. It:

• shows models of interlinked clusters of social and emotional capabilities that are of value to all people, supported by a strong evidence base demonstrating their link to outcomes such as educational attainment, employment, and health
• sets out a matrix of available tools to measure these capabilities, outlining which capabilities each tool covers, and key criteria that might be considered in selecting an appropriate tool
• outlines a step by step approach to measuring these capabilities in practice, that is illustrated in four case studies that exemplify how the Framework has been successful in my life.

"By building a framework of patience, once you have this

then you can pull it off."
